Dr. Ida P. Rolf developed the process of Structural Integration (Rolfing) as a holistic system combining soft tissue manipulation and movement education to restore the body to its natural state of alignment and balance. Structural Integration lengthens, restores and reorganizes the connective tissue of the body also known as fascia. Unlike other forms of bodywork where the focus is on the specific area that is causing you pain, Structural Integration looks at the “big picture”… Your whole body.
Fascia is the uninterrupted web of connective tissue found throughout your body. It envelopes each muscle, organ, nerve, bone, and blood vessel holding your body together. The fascia reacts to acute injuries, chronic pain and repetitive movement patterns. It then shortens, thickens and compresses becoming glue like. This imparts a strain on your body in a number of directions, much like a “snag in a sweater”. Structural Integration will help correct these issues by returning the fascia to its natural state.
Dr. Ida Rolf discovered that the human body was organized in layers and that it responded the most positively by working the fascia layer by layer much like an onion. The first 4 sessions work the “Sleeve” the superficial and external muscles. Sessions 5-8 work the “Core” the deeper, intrinsic muscles. Sessions 9-12 integrate all of the previous sessions, bringing your body to a state of balance structurally and functionally.
